True Stories from the Lives of American Rails Told by Trafford Published Author Alan Allen

A first of its kind, the book shares true stories from the lives of American Rails. Six generations of dispatchers, firemen, brakemen, steam engineers, switchmen and superintendents (and the first women engineers and rails) share their personal experiences of Southern Pacific, Western Pacific, Santa Fe and Amtrak.
The Original Old Rails’ Tales is an oral journalism/oral history book that features the lives of the men and women of the American Railroad. Having received positive reviews from the New York Times when released as a limited edition hardcover in 1991, Trafford Publishing is proud to announce the new abridged family edition of “The Original Old Rails’ Tales: Anecdotes, Stories & Memoirs on the Road and in the Yard” by Alan Allen.
This Trafford published book shares 285 anecdotes and true stories for readers 9 year old and up. The Original Old Rails’ Tales also features an interview with Linda Neimann (author of “On the Rails” previously titled “Boomer: Railroad Memoirs” and “Railroad Voices”) and foreword by Studs Terkel (author of the “The Good War: An Oral History of World War Two”). Allen’s is the only railroad book that, instead of dwelling statistics, weights and measures, concentrates on the feelings of the people involved with American rails. The author provides a straightforward oral journal; focusing on emotional moments in the lives of the servants of the American “rails”. The book showcases the emotional highlights of the unsung heroes of the American steam era. Rails from all walks of life (conservatives, rebels, best friends, comedians, and more) are interviewed in this book.
