Senior Citizens!, Do you like the old steam trains?….I wrote this on tne !00thAnniversary of steam,?

And lived within 50 yards of the shed where “Locomotion” was built, and a mile away from the first passenger steam rails in the world……..Hackworths Dream……….The clang of hand hammers, The night sky, lit up red!…Sparks flying, from the roof, of an old Shildon shed……Inside a dream, coming to life,..As Timothy Hackworth, sweated and toiled,… With muscles aching, and tired as a dog!…The fire lit, and the water boiled!…….The resulting steam, powered the world…And the Industrial era began!…And from small acorns, mighty oak trees grew….Undoubtedly, a far seeing man!……A necklace of rails, now circle the, Globe…Gargantuan engines, pulling hundreds of tons…Grown from an embryo, in a black smiths head…A gift to the world. and their sons!………….Hope you like it?…

Oh God yes!

They had a character, sadly lacking in modern times. Any rail journey was something to forward to. Arriving at the station, hearing the whistles and the roar of steam. Uniformed porters (where did THEY go?) trundling iron-wheeled wooden luggage trolleys to and fro. Entering the dull green and cream waiting rooms, being greeted with a blast of heat from the coke stove or open fire.

Getting on the train, big brass handles on carriage doors. Walking along the corridor looking for an empty compartment, settling into a plush seat, fold-down armrests, with that particularly familiar warm, unique smell. Closing the compartment door with a satisfying rumble and a click, isolating you from ther rest of the world so you could sit back and enjoy the journey in contented isolation. Drawing the blinds if you fancied a nap on a long journer. The prints on the walls above the netted luggage racks. And real wood everywhere.

Being able to stretch your legs in the corridor, and being able to open the window at the end, lean out , and try to see the engine on a bend,.The sudden darkness, the blast of sound and steam, the smell of smoke as you enter a tunnel.

Todays plastic monstrosities may be efficient, and pollution-free, but they are no fun. They have no character. Sterile is the word. Sitting on uncomfortable seats, confronted by a white plastic table, no-smoking signs glaring down at you from every available flat surface. Raucious brats, i-Pods, mobile phones jangling everywhere, people tapping on laptops, teenagers eating each other. If you fancy a coffee and a sausage roll, you need to have about £10 to spare. And God help you if, like me, you are a smoker!

No, we may go on about the ‘good old days’, but truth be told, that is exactly what they were. I would willingly give ten years of the present, for one year back then.

Toddler Thomas The Tank Engine Costume

Toddler Thomas The Tank Engine Costume

$33.95

Despite his nascent sentience, Thomas the Tank Engine doesn’t drive himself. He needs and engineer, he needs Mr. Conductor in the form of Toddler Thomas The Tank Conductor Costume. A train without a driver is like a bird without a feather or a stove without coal. The Toddler Thomas The Tank Conductor Costume comes with a jumpsuit with muscle torso and arms, as well as an engineer’s cap (which is critical to driving a train). Whether you’re a fan of Thomas the Tank Engine, the Orient Express, or the Transsiberian, this costume is the costume for you, because, after all, who doesn’t love trains? And no matter what don’t let that Sir Topham Hatt tell you what to do. That guy is so darn pushy. The Toddler Thomas The Tank Conductor Costume is a Halloween costume of the train driver to the world’s favorite steam locomotive!
